Artbust supports the "Peckham Vision " initiative to save the historic town centre CONTROVERSIAL PLANS TO LOCATE TRAM DEPOT TfL (Transport for London) & Southwark Council plan to locate major maintenance depot for proposed Cross River Tram in heart of Peckham town centre. Southwark already paid TFL several millions in order to get the depot in this site. Locals are taken by surprise for the lack of information. Plans to purchase compulsory the site for very little money look suspicious since there is much opposition from the locals against the depot plan. It looks like there is an interested third party to buy the area and make profit. The depot would take more than 5 acres, and destroy or disperse 40 businesses, over 400 jobs, 9 African churches, about 60 artists, and lose for ever these creative, flexible, exciting urban spaces in Peckham. This includes a brand new social housing development. Central Government Planning Inspector rejected the proposal because the decision to locate in Peckham was 'defective' and based on 'misinformation' that the site was derelict, and other possible locations had been prematurely discarded. The newly elected Southwark Council is now beginning the final countdown to a decision on this large central Peckham site being earmarked for the tram depot in the context of decisions on the Unitary Development Plan (UDP) for land use in the borough; Key meetings in Southwark Town Hall, Peckham Road, SE5: Monday 19 June/6pm Monday 26 June/7pm Wednesday 28 June/7pm Then a 6-week consultation period will
