These works explore the relation
between calligraphy and drawing in two ways: firstly, many Chinese
characters themselves have their roots in pictograms and are
the representation of a thing or an idea; secondly, Chinese calligraphy
is one way of representing the body which is given voice and
movement by a spontaneous energy called in Chinese 'qi'. This
energy is produced at the time of performance, writing or drawing.
In this way Chinese calligraphy is a drawing of the artist and
their physical action translated into characters or abstract
